MERCADO EN EL MUELLE 4
The project is the final result of the course Taller II at ETSA - Escuela Técnica Superior de Malaga (2022). It locates in the area of Muelle 4 and it's part of the urban regeneration of the entire Malaga's waterfront. The aim of the program is to convert the former industrial areas of the docks in new lively and livable public spaces for citizens and tourists. A new market in Muelle 4 can join both, encouraging their coexistence. The concept of the building consists in a mirrored cover that reflects the colours and the vibrant life of the underlying market.
As a first step, the market has to be located in a safe area, distant enough both from the traffic of Avenida Heredia and from the port. It also has to be respectful of its context and preserve open views toward both the sea and the city. For achieving this, I choose a simple, non- invadent steel structure with a thin canopy. The idea was to design a building that acts like a "bridge" between the existent city and its waterfront, in a physical but also in a visual way as it proposes as an open door connecting the two systems.
Below the main roof, at a lower height, the market stands are positioned. All the market stands are single unites provided of an independent closing system of sliding policarbonate panels. The space between them continuously flows between inside and outside so it can be used also when the market stalls are closed.
Also, a space for temporary market was needed. For this purpose, I choose to repeate the rhythm of the inner steel stucture also outside through the use of palm trees. The space in between the trees is marked by a different paving and can host temporary market stalls when needed.
